Storm Clean-Up: Volunteer Coordination
Pierre, S.D. –The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce is coordinating volunteer help for the Pierre-Fort Pierre storm recovery effort. Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill says the chamber will serve as a coordination point for both people who need volunteer help and those who are willing to volunteer their time.
“As early as this morning, we started hearing from individuals and organizations wondering how they can help,” said Mayor Gill. “During recovery efforts, volunteer coordination is a large task. I’m very pleased the chamber has agreed to manage the effort.”
People who are interested in volunteering to help clear debris are encouraged to contact the Chamber of Commerce between 8 a.m. and 7p.m. at 605.224.7361. Volunteers can specify whether they prefer to work on public land cleaning up parks, or on private land helping individuals clear personal property.
All volunteers will be asked to complete a form, provide identification, and inform the chamber of any special tools or equipment the volunteer has available and is willing to use for the clean-up effort.
“We are so thankful with the number of people who are ready to roll up their sleeves to help those in need. There’s a lot of clean-up work to be done, but together, we can make a great deal of progress in a relatively short amount of time,” said Laura Schoen Carbonneau, CEO, Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce.
People who are in need of volunteer assistance should also contact the chamber between 8 a.m. and 7p.m. at 605.224.7361. Volunteers will be dispatched to those who request help on a first-come first-serve basis.
“We will do our best to accommodate all requests,” said Schoen Carbonneau. “We have volunteers already prepared to start working. If you need help, I encourage you to call the chamber.”
The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce serves both the Pierre and Fort Pierre communities and is located at 800 W. Dakota Avenue in Pierre.
