[ARCHIVED] City Preps Streets for New Program

City Preps Streets for New Program

Motorist might notice “no parking” cones popping up around Pierre this week.

The City of Pierre’s Street Department is preparing select streets for a slurry seal; that’s the new street maintenance tactic the city is introducing this year.

To prepare for it, the city must first clear debris, sweep the streets, and fill any existing potholes.

“It’s best if we can clear the impacted streets from curb to curb,” said Josh Bible, Construction and Operations Manager. “That’s why we’re asking people to use off-street parking whenever there are ‘no parking’ cones in the middle of the street.”

The city expects the cones will only be up for a day on any given street. Once the “no parking” cones are removed, motorists should feel free to use on-street parking.

A slurry seal is a street preservation tactic that uses an oil-based seal mixed with very small rocks to improve traction control while preventing moisture from penetrating a street surface.

The city plans to slurry seal about 50 blocks of street this season.

The city maintains more than 80 miles of streets.
