 Lovebugs, love stories, and valentine treats. Rawlins Library has something for book lovers of all kinds this February!

HUGHES COUNTY AND STANLEY COUNTY LIBRARY CARDS

In 2024, Hughes and Stanley County residents are eligible for free library cards from Rawlins Library. Bring in a photo ID and proof of residency to get yours!

BOOK CLUB KITS

Rawlins Library now offers kits for hosting your own book club! Kits include copies of each book, as well as a tub to keep them in. Put together a group of friends to enjoy one of the following books.

  • Could You Survive Midsomer by Simon Brew
  • Don’t Look Back by Achut Deng and Keely Hutton 
  • None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
  • Vanished in Vermillion by Lou Raguse  
  • Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

ONE BOOK RAWLINS LIBRARY: DON’T LOOK BACK

During 2024, Rawlins Library is encouraging all adult patrons to participate in the One Book program and read Don’t Look Back by Achut Deng and Keely Hutton. The non-fiction book follows an orphaned six-year-old girl through an African refugee camp to her challenges establishing a life in the United States. Throughout 2024, Rawlins will host a series of events related to Don’t Look Back, and the One Book program. Book copies are available at Rawlins Library or through the Libby app.

HOOPLA

Rawlins Library is expanding its digital offerings with Hoopla. It provides users access to comics, manga, music, movies, and TV, as well audiobooks and eBooks. Visit Rawlins Library to learn more.

TAKE AND MAKE LOVE BUGS

During the month of February, stop at Rawlins Library for all the supplies you need to make your very own love bug magnet. Directions and all needed materials are available at the circulation desk, while supplies last.

February Storytime at Rawlins Library

Every Wednesday in the South Dakota Room: Two sessions: 10:00AM and 10:30AM

We missed you! Storytime returns to Rawlins Library this February. Enjoy storytelling and sing-along fun on Wednesday mornings. Storytime is February 7, 14, 21 and 28 in the SD Room.

for the thrill of it book CLUB (1ST and 3RD Sundays)

Feb. 4 & 18, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Rawlins Library has ten spots open for it’s new For the Thrill of It book club. In February, the group is reading None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell. Register for this thriller genre reading book club by visiting the front desk at the library or calling 605.773.7421. Must be 18 or older.

 

Makerspace Monday: Hooray, It’s National Pizza Day!

Monday, Feb. 5, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

Pepperoni? Cheese? Sausage and sauerkraut? What’s your favorite pizza? We’re celebrating National Pizza Day early this year. (The official date of this “cheesy” observance is Feb. 9.) Kids will have a good time making their very own pizza banner. Join us in the SD Room for storytelling and fun crafting. Kids of all ages are invited to our after-school programming.

 

ADULT BOOK CLUB (TUESDAYS)

Feb. 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 6 p.m.

In February, the club will read Angry Housewives Eating Bon-bons by Lorna Landvik. To reserve a book or join the club, email rawlinslibrary@ci.pierre.sd.us, call 605.773.7421, or sign up in person. Water and coffee are provided. Participants must be 18 or older.

Learn how to use your digital devices to enjoy all of the library’s digital resources with one-on-one help from one of Rawlins’ librarians. Book a 30-minute session by calling 605.773.7421.

Sunday, Feb. 11, 1 p.m.

Join other valentine enthusiasts to make your very own special valentine – a yarn-wrapped wire word. Registration is requested at the library’s front desk or by calling 605.773.7421. 


LOVE STORIES: GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHS

Tuesday, Feb. 13. 6:30 p.m. 

Are you a sucker for a good love story?  Join Jay Mickelson as he shares love stories from Greek and Roman myths. Registration is requested by stopping at the library’s front desk or by calling 605.773.7421.


After School Program: Valentine Cookies

Wednesday, Feb. 14 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

What do you get when you have graham crackers, frosting, Valentine candy, sparkling sugar, and sprinkles? Ta-da! You have a plate of Valentine cookies to share with family and friends. This after school program will feature Valentine-theme stories and time to make decorated graham cracker cookies. Kids of all ages are invited to our after-school programming.

 

trivia night

Thursday, Feb. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

It’s trivia night at the library, and the program is open to people of all ages. There’s a prize for the winning team, and the event qualifies for a stamp in the One Book passport. 

 

PUZZLES & PIE

Thursday, Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m. 

Enjoy a cerebral and a sweet treat during the puzzle and pie program brought to you by Rawlins Friends of the Library. Friends of the Library will provide puzzles and pie. You provide the brain power and the appetite. Registration required by calling 605.773.7421 or visiting the front desk at the library.

 

Makerspace Monday: A Silly Leap Frog for Leap Day

Monday, Feb. 26 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

Join us after school for a Makerspace Monday program that comes around only once every four years. There will be stories and plenty of time to make a silly leapfrog craft. Kids of all ages are welcome to our Makerspace programs.
