Rawlins Library: March Programming


PIERRE, SD – Saint Patrick’s Day activities, a special holiday guest, and a virtual tour of one of Pierre’s most historic homes are all happening at Rawlins Library in March.


HUGHES COUNTY AND STANLEY COUNTY LIBRARY CARDS

In 2024, Hughes and Stanley County residents are eligible for free library cards from Rawlins Library. Bring in a photo ID and proof of residency to get yours!


YOUTH ART MONTH

During March, 6th – 12th grade students are invited to enter an art competition at Rawlins Library. Submissions are due by March 31, entry forms are required with submissions, submissions are limited to one entry per person. Gift cards will be awarded to winners and art will be displayed at the library during April. Submission forms are available at Rawlins Library. 

 

TAKE AND MAKE LOVE SHAMROCKS & BUNNY BASKETS

During March, stop at Rawlins Library for all the supplies you need to make a hanging shamrock or a paper bunny basket. Directions and all needed materials are available at the circulation desk, while supplies last.


ADULT BOOK CLUB (TUESDAYS)

March 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 6 p.m.

In March, the club will read Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini . To reserve a book or join the club, email rawlinslibrary@ci.pierre.sd.us, call 605.773.7421, or sign up in person. Water and coffee are provided. Participants must be 18 or older.

MARCH STORYTIME AT RAWLINS LIBRARY

March 6, 13, and 20, Sessions starting at 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Join us in the South Dakota Room Wednesday mornings for stories and sing-along fun. On March 20, expect a special guest with large ears and a hop in his step!

HAPPY 120TH BIRTHDAY, DR. SEUSS!

Saturday, March 2, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Reading with your child helps stimulate their imagination, improves their language skills, and inspires them to be life-long readers. Chances are, one of your children’s all-time favorite books was written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss. What better way to celebrate childhood literacy and Dr. Seuss’ 120th birthday than spending a morning at Rawlins Library? Enjoy family time making a Seuss-inspired craft and browsing the stacks for another favorite book.

 

FOR THE THRILL OF IT BOOK CLUB

Sunday, March 3, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The For the Thrill of It book club will read The Liar’s Girl by Catherine Howard. Register for this thriller genre reading book club by visiting the front desk at the library or calling 605.773.7421. Must be 18 or older.

 

MAKE A ST. PATRICK'S BOUTONNIERE

Sunday, March 10, 3 p.m.

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, we have program to help you make a four-leaf clover boutonniere. Join other St’ Patty’s Day fans at the library for this guided crafting experience. All needed materials are provided. Registration requested by calling 605.773.7421 or in person at the library.

MAKESPACE MONDAY: ST. PADDY'S DAY BASKET & TREATS

Monday, March 11, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

Our St. Patrick’s Day program is better than finding a pot of gold. That’s no blarney! We’ll make a festive Irish basket and fill it with chocolate chip cookies. Join us in the SD Room for St. Paddy’s Day stories and fun crafting. Kids of all ages are invited to our after school programming.

Monday, March 11, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

THE HISTORY OF THE FARR HOUSE

Tuesday, March 12, 2 p.m.  

Take a virtual tour of one of Pierre’s most historic houses, the Farr House, with Ashley Boone.  Boone will lead the tour and share the history of the house she now calls home. Registration requested by calling 605.773.7421 or in person at the library.

 

QUILT SHOWCASE

Thursday, March 14, 12 p.m.

It’s National Quilt Day! Use this opportunity to be inspired by locally made quilts with items (neckties!) found around the house. Bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy the guided conversation led by Esther Burkett from Pierre’s Quilt Yard.

 

MAKERSPACE MONDAY: NATIONAL PUPPY DAY

Monday, March 18, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

We’re celebrating National Puppy Day early. (Who can wait to celebrate awesome puppies until March 23?) During this Makerspace Monday, we’ll create a fun dog-theme craft and hear stories about pups both young and old. Kids of all ages are invited to our after-school programming.

 

EARLY RELEASE DAY PROGRAM: SPRING ROBIN'S NEST

Wednesday, March 20, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the SD Room

Have you seen the first robin of spring? We will celebrate spring, Easter, and all things new during this Early Release Day program. Join your friends at the library for crafts plus stories of Easter eggs, bunnies, little yellow chicks, and all things spring. Kids of all ages are welcome, and there might even be a special guest with big ears!


WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Thursday, March 21, 6 p.m.  

Celebrate Women’s History Month by learning about women who mattered in Central South Dakota history. Local expert Doug Mortenson will lead the program. Registration requested by calling 605.773.7421 or in person at the library.
