The late Delbert A. Jones of Harold was honored June 5th when family and friends gathered at Steamboat Park in Pierre to witness the planting of a memorial tree in his honor. The four foot tall black hills spruce tree was donated by the "Arizona Family" or friends of the Jones that reside in Arizona. Ron Schreiner, chair of the City Arbor Board, thanked the family members and twenty plus friends that gathered. Schreiner stated the tree will be perpetually cared for by the parks department and an engraved name plate will be installed in the memorial tree kiosk nearby. Schreiner also read to the group ten benefits a tree provides a community.
Tom Farnsworth, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City, said the City had been working with Andrea Robinson for a couple of months to get the details and schedule the planting. Todd Kelly, Parks Superintendent planted the tree after which friends of the family gave comments on their memories of Delbert Jones.
The City of Pierre Arbor Board accepts requests for memorial trees and plantings in the parks. To gain additional information contact Tom Farnsworth at 773-2527.
