[ARCHIVED] Rawlins Library: January Programming

Start the new year off by joining a book club, taking an Adulting 101 class, or tackling a reading challenge. Rawlins Library has options for all of that and more this January! 

The Zap Winter youth Reading Challenge

Through January 31, 2025

Read 20 minutes each day of the holiday break and earn ticket vouchers for a 2025 Oahe Zap baseball game and a chance at a free Oahe Zap hat. Reading logs can be returned to the library between Jan. 31 and Feb. 7.

Adult Winter Reading Challenge

January through March 2025

Adults are encouraged to read various genres of books and complete a reading log. Completed logs can be returned to the library the week of April 1 through 7 for a free book. Limit one free book per adult reading log.

2025 Common Read Book

Starting January 2

This year’s Common Read Book is Someone Knows by Christine Wevik and focuses on South Dakota’s cold cases. All library patrons are encouraged to read the book in 2025.

Celebrate Your Birthday at the Library

Starting Jan. 2 

Starting in 2025, kids ages one through eleven can pick up a free book for their birthday and get a small prize from the treasure chest. Birthday prizes must be redeemed within five days of the child’s birthday.

Birthday Party for Louis Braille

Saturday, January 4 at 10 AM 

The South Dakota State Library will be presenting a program on Braille in honor of Louis Braille’s birthday. Louis Braille completed the Braille system when he was only 15 years old. The State Library will bring Braille Lego bricks along with Braille books. Birthday cake will be served.

Crafternoon: Snowflakes

Monday, January 6 at 3:30 PM 

Sparkly snowflakes will be featured at the Jan. 6 Crafternoon. Kids will use pipe cleaners and beads to make one-of-a-kind creations of snowflakes. Popcorn will be served.

Cozy Book Club

Tuesday, January 7 at 9:30 AM 

This interactive large-print book club is open to the public. In January, cozy mystery is Planning for Murder: A North Dakota Library Mystery by Ellen Jacobson. Coffee and cookies will be served.

Super Senior Day

Tuesday, January 7

Free scanning and printing are available to seniors along with a display of new large print books. Coffee and cookies will be served.

Rides for Readers All Day (Tuesdays)

Jan. 7, 14, 21, and 28 

Senior citizens living in Pierre and Fort Pierre can get a free ride to the library every Tuesday until March 31. To reserve your ride, call River Cities Transit at 605.945.2360 at least 24 hours in advance.

Tuesday Night Book Club

January 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 6 PM

If you’re looking to jump into a new book club, Rawlins Library’s Tuesday Night Club is recommended. This month, the group will read The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Murray. To reserve a book or join the club, email rawlinslibrary@ci.pierre.sd.us, call 605.773.7421, or sign up in person. Water and coffee are provided. Participants must be 18 or older.

Tween / Teen Crochet Club (Tuesdays)

January 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 3:30 PM

Designed for kids aged 10 and up, this new program will start with the chain stitch. Seats are limited; sign up requested by contacting the library. Popcorn will be served.

Adult Board Game Night

Thursday, January 9 at 6 PM

An interactive mystery board game will be featured. A sign-up is recommended to ensure there are enough people to play.

Crafternoon: Perler Beads

Monday, January 13 at 3:30 PM

Perler beads will be the feature of this Crafternoon event. Perler patterns are available for Carebears, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Minecraft. Popcorn will be served.

Lego Club

Thursday, January 16 at 3:30 PM

Minecraft Legos will be out and ready for free play. Popcorn will be served.

For the Thrill of It Book Club

Sunday, January 19 at 3 PM

If you like mystery and suspense books, this club’s for you! The January book will be The Boyfriend by Frieda McFadden.

Bingo for Books

Thursday, January 23 at 3:30 PM

Kids will play Bingo and receive a free book as a Bingo prize. Popcorn will be served. Free books are provided largely through donations.

Hobby Fair

Saturday, January 25 from 10 AM to 12 PM

The library will have tables out to showcase various local hobbies. Companion books will be available, as well as companion tutorials through CreativeBug.

Early Release Program: Books and Battleship

Wednesday, January 29 at 1 PM

Kids can play Battleship and receive a book for coming to the program as a prize. Popcorn will be served.

Adulting 101

Thursday, January 30 at 6 PM

Take your adulting to the next level in 2025! During January’s installment, hear from local retirement expert June Larson. She’ll provide basic retirement information.
