Rawlins Library: February Programming
You’ll find more than Valentine’s fun at Rawlins Library this February. You can also learn a new skill, get educated, or hear first-hand from someone who survived two weeks in Antarctica.
ONGOING PROGRAMS
2025 Common Read Book
This year’s Common Read Book is Someone Knows by Christine Wevik and focuses on South Dakota’s cold cases. All library patrons are encouraged to read the book in 2025.
Adult Winter Reading Challenge
January through March 2025
Adults are encouraged to read various genres of books and complete a reading log. Completed logs can be returned to the library the week of April 1 through 7 for a free book. Limit one free book per adult reading log.
For the Thrill of It Book Club
Feb. 16 at 2:30 p.m.
Rawlins Library has ten spots open for its new For the Thrill of It book club. The book of the month is Lady Killer by Katherine Wood. Register for this thriller genre reading book club by visiting the front desk at the library or calling 605.773.7421. Must be 18 or older.
Rides for Readers All Day (Tuesdays)
Feb. 4, 11, 18, and 25
Senior citizens living in Pierre and Fort Pierre can get a free ride to the library every Tuesday until March 31. To reserve your ride, at least 24 hours in advance, call River Cities Transit at 605.945.2360.
Tween / Teen Crochet Club (Tuesdays)
Feb. 4, 11, 18, and 25 at 3:30 p.m.
Designed for kids aged 10 and up, this program starts with basic stitches and builds on skills throughout the season. Supplies provided. Seats are limited; registration requested by contacting the library. Popcorn will be served.
Adult Book Club (Tuesdays)
Feb. 4, 11, 18 & 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday Morning Storytime
Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 10 a.m.
Wednesday morning Storytime is back! Parents, caregivers, and kids will enjoy hearing fun stories, singing songs, and maybe fan favorite, the parachute.
STAND ALONE PROGRAMS
Saturday Morning Storytime and Valentine Craft
Saturday, Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m.
Start February out with some Valentine fun! This program starts with interactive storytelling and sing-along fun. Following that, kids and caregivers will enjoy making a Valentine-theme craft.
Crafternoon: “Bee Mine” Valentine
Monday, Feb. 3, 3:30 p.m.
Valentine’s Day is all the “buzz” at this session of Crafternoon. We’ll make cute bee-themed Valentines using paper rolls, googly eyes, color paper, and more.
Super Senior Day
Tuesday, Feb. 4
Senior citizens can enjoy refreshments, up to ten pages of free printing, up to five pages of free faxing, and a free ride to the library during Super Senior Day. Those living in Pierre and Fort Pierre are eligible for the free rides from River Cities Transit. To schedule a ride, 24 hours in advance, call 605.945.2360.
Cozy Book Club
Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 9:30 a.m.
This interactive large-print book club is open to the public. In February, the cozy mystery is Fondant Fumble by Jenn McKinlay. Coffee and cookies will be served.
Dementia Education
Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1 p.m.
Sarah Viola with Peaceful Pines Senior Living in Fort Pierre and author of “When Waves Rise: Navigating Difficult Moments Associated with Dementia” will present information about dementia and memory care. She will also provide resources and tips for caregivers, as well as copies of her book. Registration requested by calling Rawlins Library at 605.773.7421.
School’s out! Valentine’s Day Cards
Thursday, Feb. 13, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On your day off from school, stop by the library and make Valentine’s Day cards during this come and go program. Card making supplies provided while supplies last.
Adulting 101: How to File Your Taxes
Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
Pierre local Paul Henriksen will provide a presentation about the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program that provides tax preparation services for most adults throughout the community. The event is free and open to the public.
School’s Out: Valentine Bingo
Thursday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
It’s the perfect time to break open the bag of conversation hearts and play Valentine Bingo! Participants receive a free book!
School’s Out: Friday Free Play
Friday, Feb. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There’s no school, so spend some time at the Library’s Free Play Friday program. This come and go program will feature LEGO bricks, board games, puppets, puppet theater, giant UNO, and more!
Aging Well Workshop: Decoding Mental Health in Older Age
Wednesday, Feb. 19, 10 a.m.
Access this free online workshop provided by SDSU and NDSU at Rawlins Library. The workshop, led by an SDSU professor, will help participants determine who might be at an increased risk for mental health conditions, identify the difference between the symptoms of dementia and mental health, and explore risk reduction and stress management.
Fun with Lego Club

Create a LEGO masterpiece using Rawlins Library’s large collection of specialized bricks, minifigures, LEGO Minecraft kits and more.
Writers Club

Did you know February is National Bird Feeding Month? We will make a homemade garland (cereal, pipe cleaners, etc.) that birds are sure to love.
Two Weeks in Antarctica
Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Hear from Bree Oatman about her professional development experience in one of the coldest, windiest places on earth. This local educator was one of just a handful of teachers from across the continent selected by National Geographic to visit the Antarctic.
