[ARCHIVED] Community Partnership Lights the Way at Griffin Park Pickleball Courts

PIERRE, SD – Griffin Park’s pickleball courts are officially brighter thanks to a strong show of community support and partnership. New court lighting has been installed, expanding play opportunities and enhancing one of Pierre’s most popular recreation spaces.

Since opening two years ago, the courts have seen steady use from sunrise to sunset. The addition of lighting now allows early-morning and evening matches, especially during the shoulder seasons when daylight hours are limited. The improvement responds directly to player demand and continued growth in the sport locally.

The fundraising effort was led by two dedicated groups:

  • Capital Area Pickleball Association (CAPPA)
  • A donor group organized by Matt Judson, including Mark and Christy Jerome, Paul and Megan Bowman, First Dakota National Bank, and First National Bank in Pierre

Together, these community partners contributed $24,750. The City of Pierre assisted in running electrical service to the courts, providing equipment support, and a small financial contribution.

“This is a great example of how the City can partner with local community groups,” said Mayor Steve Harding. “Thank you to CAPPA and the local donor group for helping bring this project to life.”

Lighting was originally planned during the construction of the courts but had to be postponed due to rising material costs following 2020. Thanks to the continued commitment from the pickleball community, that vision is now complete.

The lights operate on a timer system to balance usability with consideration for nearby residents. Fence repairs are also on the horizon.

On December 2, the City Commission formally accepted the donations and approved the lighting proposal. A first reading of Ordinance 1885, a budget supplement that recognizes both donation revenue and project expenses, was also completed.

The Griffin Park pickleball courts have quickly become a community gathering place for players of all ages and skill levels. With lighting now in place, the City looks forward to seeing the courts continue to grow as a vibrant recreational asset for years to come.
