[ARCHIVED] Go Green and Clean: Volunteers Needed for City-Wide Spring Clean-Up

Pierre, S.D. –Spring isn’t quite here, but the City is already planning its annual spring clean-up campaign and looking for volunteers to help with it.

Go Green and Clean, the clean-up campaign, is in its seventh year. Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill initiated the campaign in 2009, shortly after being elected Mayor. Since then, the program has continually grown.

“Last year, we set a record with more than 100 volunteers participating in the spring clean-up effort,” said Mayor Gill. “It was incredible to have so many people willing to help spruce up our community, and I’m hoping our community members are just as generous with their time this year.”

Go Green and Clean projects range from cleaning up road right-of-ways, to painting park structures, to shining up the statues along the Trail of Governors. The City lines up all the volunteer opportunities, and volunteers can choose an opportunity of their liking.

Businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in the program, and those that do will be acknowledged through the Business Recognition Program that publicly salutes those that take on a Go Green and Clean project.

Those interested in participating, whether as a group or as individuals, should contact Tom Farnsworth, City Parks and Recreation Director by Friday, April 1. He can be reached at 605.773.2527.

In 2015, volunteers and city staff collected seven tons of debris during the Go Green and Clean Spring Clean-Up campaign. Mayor Gill says that’s what this effort is all about.

“That’s 14,000 pounds of trash and drebris we got out of our parks, off our streets, and properly disposed of,” said Mayor Gill. “We all want to live in a beautiful and inviting community, and this campaign helps keep Pierre looking its best.”
