PIERRE, S.D. – On Thursday, April 28, Pierre will officially be recertified as a Tree City USA by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. The certification award will be presented during the Arbor Day Program at Rawlins Municipal Library.
This is the 33rd year the City of Pierre has been recognized as a Tree City USA. To be recognized as a Tree City USA, a community must meet urban forestry management standards, like maintaining a tree board and having a tree ordinance.
Ron Schreiner, Chair of the City Arbor Board and organizer of the Arbor Day Program said, “The City works hard to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of this community. Trees are paramount to keeping Pierre’s environment healthy and attractive, and the Tree City USA award is a testament to Pierre’s commitment to its natural beauty.”
Following the award portion of the agenda, kids from the YMCA Day Camp will plant trees donated by Modern Woodman of America on the Rawlins Library grounds. As part of the Arbor Day activities, the YMCA and Pierre Rawlins Municipal Library will partner together to offer a special children’s craft activity and book reading at the YMCA.
The Arbor Day Program, sponsored by the Pierre Arbor Board, begins at 3:45 at Rawlins Municipal Library. The children’s activities at the YMCA will begin after the conclusion of the Arbor Day Program. The ceremony, as well as kids’ activities are open to the public.
The Pierre Arbor Board is a six-person volunteer advisory board appointed by the Mayor. The group meets once a month to address policies and plans relative to City tree management.
