The portion of Pierre’s walking path that stretches along the waterfront from the Missouri River car bridge to Poplar Avenue is closed for rehabilitation.
The current eight-foot-wide asphalt path will be replaced with a 10-foot-wide concrete path. Additional enhancements include new rest stops with seating, an ADA accessible drinking fountain and new trash receptacles. Landscaping upgrades include heavy-duty planters, shade trees, and plantings between the trail and the river for erosion control.
Construction is expected to be complete in late May with the path reopening in early June. This rehabilitation is funded, in part, by a Recreational Trails Program grant from the South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks.
The City of Pierre maintains more than 50 miles of multiuse trails that connect directly to State of South Dakota and City of Fort Pierre trail systems.
