[ARCHIVED] Commission Bids Pickleball Courts, Requests Proposals for Baseball League

Commission Bids Pickleball Courts, Requests Proposals for Baseball League

In two separate moves, the Pierre City Commission pushed forward plans for new City pickleball courts and for continued collegiate baseball play at Hyde Stadium.

Pickleball Courts

The Pierre City Commission approved a request to bid the construction of a four-court pickleball development just north of the baseball field in Griffin Park. Proposals for the 8,800 square foot development are due back on Aug. 18; project completion is scheduled for next year.

In October last year, the City agreed to put $50,000 toward the project, to oversee the development, and to retain ownership of the completed courts. The Capital Area Pickleball Assoc. brought the project forward and agreed to serve as its fundraising arm.

“Once we get the bids back, we’ll have a better handle on how much this project will cost and whether or not fundraising needs have been met,” said Kristi Honeywell, City Administrator.

Baseball League

The Pierre City Commission also agreed to ask for proposals from collegiate baseball leagues interested in using Hyde Stadium.

“Our existing 5-year agreement with the Expedition League is expiring,” said Kristi Honeywell, City Administrator. “This process allows a team, like the Trappers, to have exclusive use of Hyde Stadium for summer collegiate play.”

“The collegiate games have brought another layer of entertainment to the Pierre area, and I’m hopeful we can secure a new agreement and continue that baseball experience here in Pierre.”

The request for proposals states the winning bidder must enter into a separate agreement with the Post 8 baseball league.
