The Pierre Community Dog Park has partnered with the City of Pierre to construct a new Dog Park for the Pierre Community. The park will be located on City property on Sully Avenue, east of the City's Park Shop.
The group looked at a number of potential locations, weighing factors like site size, proximity to residential property, availability of water, parking, shade, and restrooms. This location hit the mark on almost all the criteria. On July 9, 2019, the City Commission approved the location to be used to develop the Dog Park.
Now that the location is established, the group has worked on layout and design of the Park, as shown below. The group is raising money to erect a fence and add amenities like fountains, benches, restrooms, and parking. The group received a grant from the SD Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources for $2,500 to purchase 19 Ponderosa Pine, Black Hills Spruce, and Colorado Green Spruce Trees for the Park. The trees will preserve the character of the neighborhood by providing park-like scenery, a sound barrier, and physical division. The trees are planted and doing well. Installation of the fence is scheduled for 2022 with other amenities to follow. The Dog Park committee has a goal of opening the park in 2022.
